Work is scheduled to commence on replacing the water pipes on Cavan Town's Cathedral Road this week.

Cathedral Road water pipe upgrade to last until September

The project to replace Cavan Town’s damaged water pipes will see work commence on Cathedral Road this week.

The work to replace approximately 258m of aged and damaged water mains along Cathedral Road is projected to be “completed by September”.

The section has been prioritised by Uisce Éireann as part of national Leakage Reduction Programme.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction. Traffic management in the form of traffic lights will be in place on the R212 Cathedral Road for the duration of the project to deliver the works safely and efficiently.

“I would like to thank the local community in advance for their patience and cooperation during the works,” said Uisce Éireann’s Declan Cawley. “We know based on previous experiences that the short-term inconvenience will be overshadowed by the long-term benefits.”

Previous work, particularly on Bridge Street last year caused annoyance among some business owners. However that section of the replacement programme involved the closure of a section of the one way road.

Of the Cathedral Road section, Mr Cawley added, “This section of water mains was prioritised for investment and replacement by Uisce Éireann due to its age and deteriorating condition, resulting in supply interruptions to homes and businesses. When completed, this project will improve water quality, significantly reduce leakage and provide local residents with a sustainable and more reliable water supply for generations to come.

Uisce Éireann outlined that fixing leaks “can be complicated” but assured they are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2021 it was reduced to 38%. The body says they are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030.
