€1.5m allocated to rural Cavan roads and laneways

This was the most funding the county has ever received under the Local Improvement Scheme.

Cavan has received almost €1.5m in funding for upgrades to rural roads and laneways across the county.

The Breffni County received the funding under the Local Improvement Scheme, bringing the total investment in local roads in Cavan to €1.74m in 2023, the most the county has ever received in a given year.

Earlier this year it was announced that Cavan County Council would receive €336,913 towards rural road and laneway improvements.

The funding, under the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS), will support the continued improvement of non-public roads and lanes that are not normally maintained by local authorities.

The announcement was made by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, who stated “this is part of a €16 million package nationwide under my Department’s Local Improvement Scheme.

“Good roads are absolutely vital for our rural communities and this investment will make a huge difference in terms of access and connectivity.”

Last year (2022) was Cavan’s best year for fixing rural roads, with works completed on 25 at a cost of €1,273,457. This compared to 22 roads fixed in 2021, four each in 2020 and 2019, 12 in 2018, and 10 in 2017.

The LIS was reinvigorated in 2017 following a number of years with no dedicated funding.

Since 2017 almost €114 million has been allocated to the scheme.

At that time, close to 200 outstanding LIS applications were on the council’s books.
