Residents evacuated as blaze breaks out at Academy Square

It was a busy weekend for the fire crews around the county who attended floods on the east coast and brought a major fire under control in Navan last night (Monday).

Residents of the Academy Square Apartments were evacuated when a blaze broke broke out in the car park beneath the building at around 7pm.

The blaze is believed to have started in old bedding in the basement. A number of vehicles were damaged and there was smoke damage to a number of apartments, but no one was injured during the incident. A number of vehicles were damaged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Cllr Tommy Reilly, who attended the scene said he was relieved that nobody had been injured, and that people had been able to return to their homes.

He paid tribute to the emergency services who brought the blaze under control.
