11 pub closures in Cavan since pandemic

One in five pubs in Ireland have shut since 2005

Some 38 pubs closed their doors in Co Cavan, according to new figures, with 11 of these closures occurring since the start of the pandemic.

The Drinks Industry Group of Irelandanalysis shows the rate of decline in rural pubs has accelerated since Covid-19.

An average of 114 pubs a year are closing their doors across the country, rising to 152 per year since 2019, with disproportionate impact in more rural towns and villages.

There has been a national decline in the trade of 22.5% (1,937 pubs) since 2005.

Drinks Industry Group of Ireland are now calling on the Government to ease the cost burden on regional small and family-run businesses to ensure their sustainability by reducing Ireland’s high alcohol excise tax over the next two years.
