The stage is set as more than 10,000 people are expected to attend the 80th annual Virginia Show today.

Holy Cow! It's Virginia Show Day

All roads lead to Virginia today (Wednesday) as more than 10,000 people are expected to attend the 80th annual Virginia Show.

Organisers have been busy preparing the showgrounds all week to ensure this year's event is bigger and better than before.

The highly-anticipated Diageo Bailey’s Cow Competition is once again the highlight for many as farmers glam up their prize Friesians in a bid to win the title and the €12,000 first place prize.

Other competition highlights include the Carnaross Mart All-Ireland Male and Female Weanling Competition and the Liffey Meats Champion Beef Bullock.

A conference entitled ‘Women in Agriculture: Finding the Balance in a New Agricultural Environment’, will also feature at the show.

If watching livestock strut their stuff in a ring isn’t your cup of tea, don’t worry. Many attendees' interest lies in the Fleetwood Paints Amateur Art Competition, The Riverfront Bar & Grill Summer Desserts Competition and of course, the produce and industry competitions in the Showhall.

A range of theme park rides, stalls and entertainment will also be available throughout the grounds.

With plenty of family fun promised, you could also take an alternative mode of transport to the Show and NO it's not a pony and trap or on pedigree horseback!

An area will also be dedicated to commemorating the show’s 80 years of success.

“As it’s our 80th show, there is an area designated for memorabilia, artefacts and photographs gathered over the years. We’ve transferred them digitally and are doing a display, which four people are working on to get ready. We’ll also have a few dignitaries and other special guests coming along on the day,” explained Show Committee President, Owen Brodie.
