New premises for Cafe Nua

2024 expansion planned.

Belturbet’s Cafe Nua is baking up something big for 2024.

The local business, which is part of the Created in Cavan network, is working towards expanding its footprint by opening a new premises in Cavan Town.

Having opened successful pop-ups in the past, sisters Vita Blauberga and Inta Dokereva now plan to put down a more permanent footprint in the county town.

This year the business celebrated three years and 2023 was their busiest year yet. They attended food markets from Dundalk to Dublin, Cootehill to Carrigallen and even further afield.

A real mark of just how far the sisters have come is reflected in Vita and Inta being invited to a special event to celebrate Latvian entrepreneurs in Ireland at the Latvian embassy in Dublin.

Both Vita and Inta, who’ve made Belturbet town their home for the past 20 years, are from a long-line of talented bakers and culinary creatives. Their grandfather Hermans opened a successful bread bakery near Riga in the 1940s.

“It has been a very busy year,” admits Vita. “But we like it and it’s a great way to meet customers. It’s really nice then when they’re coming into our coffee shop and tell us they’re all the way from Cootehill, or Dundalk. That’s really nice.”

The thriving independent café business currently employs 10 people including part timers.

“It was just the two of us at the start,” laughs Inta. “A lot has happened in three years.”

Such is the demand for their bespoke cakes that they branched into a second premises last year, devoting the café kitchen to customers coming through the door for delicious snacks, coffees and teas.

Along with plans to open a new premises in Cavan Town, Inta and Vita have accessed grant funding to assist them in setting up a new online offering.

“We are working on a website for an online shop. It’s another project, it keeps us busy, and we’re really happy.”
