Local school transport system needs 'overhaul'

The urgent need for a review of the entire school transport system and how it operates is being highlighted once again.

By way of Parliamentary Question, local Fianna Fáil TD Niamh Smyth, asked the Minister for Education to provide an update on the review of the school transport scheme.

Deputy Smyth outlined the importance of the scheme to families across Cavan and Monaghan and said it needs to be overhauled ahead of the new school year.

"I understand that there has been an extensive stakeholder engagement process, including consultation with parents, students, providers, and other key stakeholders,” said Deputy Smyth before adding the plan must now be published and improvements made.

"Every year I have parents contacting my office from both Monaghan and Cavan who have been excluded by the system,” she continued. “It causes so much extra stress for a family at a time, which is already hard for parents trying to juggle work and school. The process is outdated and needs to be reformed now.''
