N3 driver caught speeding over 200kmph

A motorist was caught driving at more than 200kmph on the N3 outside Butlersbridge over the St. Patrick’s Bank Holiday Weekend.

It is more than double the speed limit for the road, which in recent years has witnessed a number fatalities as well as serious road traffic collisions.

The detection, at Daggan, was made as gardaí mounted an extensive Roads Policing Operation between 7am on Thursday, March 14 to 7am Tuesday, March 19.

There were three fatalities on Irish roads during the holiday period, and five serious collisions that resulted in five people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries.

The car caught speeding in Cavan was clocked at 209km/hr in what is a 100km/hr zone.

Over the Bank Holiday period, An Garda Síochána carried out more than 760 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints.

Over 9,970 roadside drug and alcohol tests were also conducted which led to 175 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Throughout the weekend, almost 1,800 drivers were detected for speeding offences.

Fixed Charge Offences meanwhile were issued for other road offences. These included:

• Using Mobile Phones – more than 170

• Unaccompanied learner drivers – 92

• No seatbelts – 59

In addition:

• More than 75 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied

• Over 385 vehicles seized for having no tax or insurance

Chief Superintendent, Jane Humphries of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said: “An Garda Síochána is grateful to motorists and all those on the roads over the Bank Holiday weekend for their support and cooperation with our road safety operation. We must continue to be mindful of our actions behind the wheel and prioritise safe driving habits every day to ensure we keep all road users safe.

"Gardaí nationwide continue to work hard to enforce road traffic laws and highlight the importance of road safety among communities. We appeal to schools, workplaces, colleges and community groups to help us raise awareness among all ages, and we are always happy to get the opportunity to present to groups.”
