Walk with Daire fundraiser planned

Honorary Garda Daire Gorman’s Garda colleagues in Louth/Cavan/Monaghan have launched a fundraiser to help pay his way a member of a wheelchair football team who are set to compete in a cup competition in France later this summer.

Football and Liverpool loving Daire hit headlines last year when he was invited to Anfield on a once-in-a lifetime trip. The 12-year-old came to the attention of the world after a video of him, overcome with emotion, went viral at Anfield during the club’s anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. Following that he was invited back to spend time with outgoing club manager Jurden Klopp and a host of Liverpool stars.

Daire has since been selected as a member of the Belfast Trailblazers Powerchair Football Team who will take part in the Powerchair Football EPFA Champion’s Cup in Paris, from June 16-23.

The fundraiser is a 5KM walk with Daire in Rossmore Park, Monaghan on Sunday, April 21, at 10am.

All team members of the team travelling to France have to pay their own costs and Daire's garda friends are hoping to raise enough money to send him, his parents Kenny and Shelly and his sister Aoife to Paris for the week and to Disneyland Paris for a few days also.

A GoFundMe has already raised €2,370 of a €20,000 goal.

“After a tough year last year with Daire in daily pain, he needs another 2-3 operations on his legs this year,” explained organiser Detective Annmaire Larkin.

Any monies left over will go directly to Daire's family for help with the ongoing costs with his care.

“We want Honorary Garda Daire to know that he’ll never walk alone,” says Det Larkin.
