Help us make new awards a major success

Awards, in partnership with Mannok, take place at the Cavan Crystal Hotel, Thursday, May 23.

At the recent launch of The Anglo-Celt’s new Community and Sports Awards in the Cavan Crystal Hotel, Sports Editor Paul Fitzpatrick spoke about the importance of the exciting new initiative.

“We feel that it is very important that those who contribute so much to our communities in all areas, including sport, are recognised,” he said.

“In fact, there is a responsibility on us, as the local newspaper, to do so and to provide a platform. It is our obligation and it is also our privilege to lead this.”

Already hundreds of people from across Cavan have entered their nominations for truly deserved recognition.

The deadline for submissions is midnight on Sunday, May 5, and the awards themselves are an afternoon event, to be held in the Cavan Crystal Hotel, on Thursday, May 23.

The Anglo-Celt Sports Awards ran very successfully for a number of years before the pandemic put a halt to it. That event honoured the best and brightest in the field of sport, from the elite performers such as Leona Maguire, Paul Brady, Catherina McKiernan and the late Craig Lynch through to the grassroots volunteers and those who do so much behind the scenes for the good of others.

Due to restrictions, the awards didn’t go ahead in 2020 and 2021, and were shelved in the last two years as we sought to bring them back, bigger and better than ever.

The new-look Anglo-Celt Community and Sports Awards for 2024, in partnership with Mannok, will seek to recognise volunteers and achievers across a range of categories.

Under the Community heading, the Celt will present awards titled Volunteer of the Year, Green Project of the Year, Carer of the Year and Community Group of the Year.

Under sport, the focus will be on Hall of Fame, Young Sports Star of the Year, Outstanding Achievement of the Year and Team of the Year.

Celt readers are invited to have their say, so get in touch to share your nominations and your inspirational stories. It may be a family member, a clubmate, a neighbour or just someone you feel has gone above and beyond that deserves to be acknowledged.

The nominations are now open and the winners will be chosen by our editorial team, headed by Editor Linda O’Reilly and Sports Editor Paul Fitzpatrick.
