Roadworks progressing in west

Several roads projects are progressing across the Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District area.

Senior Area Engineer Paul Mulligan advised elected members that work on Mount Pleasant would resume as soon as the council’s ground staff had finished prepping various other road re-construction projects ahead of contractors moving on site.

They include the R-207-2, Dowra’s Main Street; the L-2541-0 Swellan Court/ Drumnavanagh in Cavan Town; work on the L-6626-0 St Patrick’s Terrace, also Cavan Town, and the nearby L-2539-0 Glenside Road, to the Cavan Rugby Club Junction; and the L-1532-0 Drumgola-Coolboyoge (Loreto Road to N3).

Other projects include work on the L5568-0 Creenagh Glebe to Drumroosk, Killeshandra; the L-5515-0 Raheelan-Greathill, Belturbet; L5045-0 Killymoriarty; L-1037-0 Kilsob towards Bawnboy; L1009-0 Tullynafreave; and the L-5542-0 Drumcrow, at Butlersbridge.

Mr Mulligan said, in respect of the Dowra project, pre-works had been completed, with the contractor to move on site in due course.

The St Patrick’s Terrace work was “not easy”, and required the installation of a geo-textile base, which was then re-enforced in order to avoid any future “sinkage”. That work was done by the council staff themselves, Mr Mulligan explained.

Fianna Fail’s Patricia Walsh said that locals in the area were concerned. “It’s a huge improvement already on what it was.”

Drainage works are continuing on the Old Cavan Road from Loreto Cross and Mr Mulligan explained there had been “drainage issues” at the junction at Killymoriarty, which first needed addressing.

The road at Tullynafreave, Mr Mulligan said, had problems with flooding in the past, and he praised the work done in various other areas, including in Blacklion where council staff had repaired footpaths.

“It’s a huge body of work,” said the engineer, who added there had been plenty of positive feedback from the communities.

Fine Gael’s Madeleine Argue thanked the council staff for their efforts, and she asked if the road could be repaired from the Cavan Bus Station roundabout out as far as McCarren’s meat processors.

That project was described as “difficult” by Mr Mulligan, who said it is being looked at.

Cllr John Paul Feeley (FF) stated that “more funding” is needed, a point backed up by Independent Brendan Fay.

Cllr Peter McVitty (FG) described the ongoing works as “brilliant”.
