St Aidan’s Comprehensive announces opening of Autism Special Class

The move as been described as a 'milestone' in the area.

St Aidan’s Comprehensive School has been officially sanctioned by the Department of Education to open an Autism Special Class. It’s a development that marks a significant milestone for the school and for support services available within the community.

The new facility will provide a nurturing and structured learning environment tailored to meet the unique needs of students with Autism.

Principal Angela Flanagan says St Aidan’s has always been committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational experience for students, and the establishment of this dedicated class further strengthens that ethos of care, respect, and opportunity for all.

“The need for greater access to Autism support within our community has been well recognised and we are grateful to now be in a position to offer this much-needed resource,” she continued.

“We firmly believe that every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential in a supportive and understanding setting. With our highly skilled and compassionate staff, we are confident that this new class will have a profoundly positive impact on the students and their families”.

The Principal, meanwhile, extends her “sincere thanks” to the Department of Education, the NCSE, and Minister Niamh Smyth for their “support and recognition” of the importance of the service provision.

“I also want to acknowledge the dedication of St Aidan’s staff and the unwavering support from parents and the broader school community, who continuously strive to make St Aidan’s a place of excellence and inclusivity,” Ms Flanagan added.

“The school looks forward to welcoming students into this new facility and ensuring that they receive the education and care they deserve. This is an exciting and meaningful step forward for our school, and we are eager to see the positive difference it will make in the lives of our students and their families”.
