Local TD calls for 'full investigation' on Henry Street incident which resulted in death

Deputy Matt Carthy has said that a full investigation is needed into the incident on Henry Street, which resulted in the death of a person accused of shoplifting and the injury of another person.

He said that he will be asking the Oireachtas Justice Committee to examine whether legislation governing private security services is "robust enough to prevent any misuse of authority and to eliminate incidents of excessive or disproportionate force."

Teachta Carthy, who is the Cathaoirleach of the Oireachtas Justice Committee, said there has been "widespread shock" following the death of Yves Sakila on Henry Street on Friday following an incident of alleged shoplifting.

“I welcome the fact that an investigation is under way into all the circumstances of this incident that led to the death of Mr Sakila and the serious injury of another person. I am calling on anyone who has any information that can assist An Garda Síochána and Fiosrú with their investigations into the incident to come forward," he stated.

“While the Garda investigation and the Fiosrú investigation must be allowed to take their course so that justice is served, we need to also ensure that legislation and regulations governing private security services are robust enough to prevent any misuse of authority and to eliminate incidents of excessive or disproportionate force.

"I will be requesting that the Oireachtas Justice Committee examine these matters in the coming period.”
