Drama to get your teeth into
A unique theatre and food experience celebrating Cavan’s rich local food culture will take place this week, bringing together storytelling, conversation, and food.
At the heart of the event is What Are We Eatin’ Anyways?, a new 40-minute comedy-drama created by The Cottage Market Cavan. The production follows local characters Jimmy and Bridie - expertly performed by much loved local actors Fiona Marie Fitzpatrick and Charlie McGuinness) as they navigate the realities of today’s food system — from food waste and packaging to the growing disconnect between people and where their food comes from. Blending humour with honest conversation, the performance invites audiences to reflect on everyday food choices, while highlighting the positive impact of supporting local farmers and producers.
Central to the story is the Local Green Box Cavan - a weekly curated selection of locally produced food sourced directly from farmers and producers across the region. Designed to make it easier for busy households to access fresh, seasonal, and sustainably produced food, the Green Box also plays a vital role in supporting the local economy and strengthening community resilience.
Following the performance, audiences are invited to continue the conversation in a relaxed, informal setting, alongside a dining experience featuring locally sourced ingredients.
After the 40-minute live theatre performance there will be an informal post-show discussion. Happily there will also be a local food experience showcasing ingredients from Cavan producers.
The event is designed to appeal to a wide audience - particularly those interested in food, sustainability, community, and making more conscious everyday choices.
Speaking about the production, Imelda Mullen of the Cottage Market events said: “We wanted to create something that makes people laugh, while also encouraging them to think differently about everyday food choices - and how those choices impact local producers, the economy, and the environment.”
What Are We Eatin' Anyways? takes place on Saturday, May 23 at 8pm in Townhall Theatre, Cavan Town. Tickets are available now via the Townhall Arts Centre website.
