Minister meets with Penneys to discuss Cavan store opening

Minister Niamh Smyth met with Penneys this week, as preparations are underway to open a new store in Cavan town.

Minister Smyth met the head of Penneys in Ireland, Fintan Costello, along with Michelle Whelan, head of People & Culture in Ireland, to discuss the progress being made on the Cavan store’s opening.

The new Cavan store will be Penneys’ 39th store in the Republic of Ireland and will be located on Cavan town’s Main Street. The store will occupy the existing Tesco site, which is set to relocate to a new premises at Townparks. While works have yet to commence, Penneys has indicated it hopes to open the new Cavan store in Spring 2028.

Minister Smyth heard how the 24,000 square metre space will generate dozens of new jobs while driving a potential 40% increase in town centre footfall.

Following the meeting, Minister Smyth said: “Since Penneys first announced their plans for Cavan back in January, I have been inundated with messages of excitement from people right across the county. I was delighted to meet with Fintan and the Penneys team to get a further update on their plans. The arrival of Penneys will be a transformative boost to our town centre, attracting footfall and supporting the wider local economy. It was fantastic to learn about how Penneys has enhanced the footfall in other towns across the country by 40%, this is something we can replicate in Cavan. I very much look forward to welcoming them to Cavan in 2028.”

Fintan Costello, Head of Penneys in Ireland said they were delighted to host Minister Smyth in Primark’s HQ.

“We know local customers in Cavan have been asking us for a store there for many years, so it’s incredibly exciting to finally make it happen. We’re really looking forward to bringing our amazing range of great value clothing and accessories to our Cavan customers and supporting the local economy. We’ll be sharing more details in the months ahead, and we can’t wait to open our doors to the people of Cavan.”
