Wins for Cremartin and Blayney open up SFC

By Colm Shalvey

Wins on Saturday for Cremartin and Castleblayney have thrown Group Two of the Greenfield Foods Monaghan SFC wide open.

Cremartin looked destined for a second defeat when they trailed Magheracloone by seven points inside the last ten minutes, but two-pointers by Tiernan Buckley and Shane Burke kick-started a remarkable finish by the Shamrocks.

David Hanley raised green and orange flags during added time and when Magheracloone touched the ball inside the arc from a short kick-out, it gifted Stephen Mooney the chance to win the game, which the county forward duly accepted as Cremartin clinched a first win of the championship by 1-18 to 2-14.

It was more straightforward in Clontibret as Castleblayney led the hosts almost from start to finish to move into second in the group on score difference.

Max McGinnity, Thomas Hughes, Brendan McElroy and Canice Murphy were among the scorers for the Faughs as they secured a big win on a scoreline of 0-21 to 2-6. All five teams in the group are now separated by just a single point, ahead of the last two rounds.

In the IFC, Donaghmoyne were slow out the traps, but finished up as comfortable winners against Tyholland, 1-11 to 0-5.

Group 1 is still all to play for, after Aughamullen came from behind to beat Killanny this evening.

Micheál Bannigan was absent for the visitors, and they struggled in the first half, before a goal from substitute CIllian Traynor changed the game midway through the second half.
