More than 1,000 motorists detected speeding on National Slow Down Day

An Garda Síochána, in partnership with the Road Safety Authority and other stakeholders, conducted a national speed enforcement operation – National #Slow Down Day – which ran for 24 hours yesterday, Monday, August 31.

Throughout this National #Slow Down Day, members of An Garda Síochána, along with GoSafe Mobile and Static Safety Cameras, detected a total of just over 1,000 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

Examples of high speeds detected include:

• 194km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N56 at Letterkenny, Co. Donegal

• 128km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R403, Naas, Co. Kildare

• 99km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Navan Road, Dublin 15

• 104km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Dublin Road in Galway

An Garda Síochána, with their road safety partner GoSafe, carries out speed enforcement on a daily basis and also conducts a number of high-profile National #SlowDown Days every year.

The aim of National #SlowDown Days is to remind motorists of the serious risks associated with excessive or inappropriate speed, promote greater compliance with speed limits and support efforts to deter and detect dangerous driving behaviours.

Yesterday’s initiative sought to promote safer driving and reduce speed-related collisions nationwide, coinciding with the first full week of schools reopening across the country when there are higher volumes of traffic on our roads.

There was also a specific focus in relation to traffic activity in the vicinity of schools at opening and closing times.
