Loop the Lakes celebrates 15 years

Fifteen years after it first began, Loop the Lakes continues to bring the Killeshandra community together- and organisers are hoping for another big turnout when the event returns this weekend.

The 15th annual Loop the Lakes Charity Run takes place on Saturday, September 5, with the 3.5km/7km Family Fun Run starting at 12 noon.

This year’s event will raise funds for SOSAD Ireland, Focus Resource Centre Killeshandra and C.A.P.S., and for organising committee member Ciaran Burns, reaching the decade and a half milestone is a major achievement.

“It’s lovely to see something that started out and has lasted this long. A lot of events start and maybe only last a few years, so it’s fantastic that it’s still going.”

Ciaran says the event’s longevity is down to the continued support of the local community.

“It’s a good, fun, family day, and that’s a big part of it.”

With its lakes, forests and surrounding countryside, the area provides a unique backdrop, and Ciaran believes Killeshandra is increasingly making the most of what it has to offer. The nearby Killykeen Forest Park is of course a major attraction, while the Camino in June has grown from strength to strength.

“Killeshandra is seeing some nice shoots. There’s lots going on,” he regards.

However, Ciaran believes it is the sense of community spirit that remains the town's greatest asset.

“There are so many people involved, whether they’re making sandwiches, cooking, helping out in some way, or whether it’s businesses supporting the event,” Ciaran says. “It’s amazing how everybody comes together.”

Remembering Cathal

The origins of Loop the Lakes begins with honouring the legacy of popular local man and Killeshandra Leaguers stalwart, Cathal O’Rourke.

The event initially focused predominantly on mental health charities such as SOSAD, before expanding its reach over the years to support other local causes.

Cathal’s memory remains central to the event.

“He’s part of that legacy,” says Ciaran. “His family are very much involved in it and never miss it. He was just one of life’s great characters, and he will always be remembered.”

And that sense of togetherness is something Ciaran suggests is a driving force that will sustain Loop the Lakes for many more years to come.

Registration opens at Killeshandra Community Centre at 10.30am before the 12 noon start. Entry is €20 for adults, €10 for U16s and €40 for a family.

Participants can register online through Killeshandra Leaguers GAA event registration, while those unable to attend on the day can also register and make a donation.

The event will include refreshments, tea, sandwiches and ice cream, as well as music, face painting and activities for children.

There will also be prizes for those who register and donate, regardless of whether they can attend.

The first prize is €500 cash, sponsored by Thomas Brady c/o Martin Shortt Insurance, with a €200 second prize sponsored by Cavan Sports Clinic.

Ciaran and the Loop the Lakes team have thanked their sponsors, including Moo'd Ice Cream, for their generosity and continued support, as well as the many other local businesses, the scores of volunteers and fellow community members who help make the event possible each year.

“It wouldn't happen without them.”
