Bishop of Meath encouraging 'modest celebrations' as sixth class students prepare for Confirmation

Bishop Tom Deenihan, Bishop of Meath, has told sixth-class candidates preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation across the diocese during 2017 that it is not "simply a ceremony or a single day in a young person’s life, but an important step on their continuing faith journey."

In a newly released video, Bishop Deenihan highlights the importance of Confirmation preparation through prayer and planning, as well as for choosing a Christian name, a sponsor, supporting parents, clergy and teachers, and to remain faithful disciples of Christ into adulthood.

In addition, Bishop Deenihan encourages candidates to take seriously the Confirmation pledge and the commitment that they are making to grow in the faith. He emphasises that Confirmation is not simply a ceremony or a single day in a young person’s life, but an important step on their continuing faith journey.

Bishop Deenihan is patron of 174 primary schools across the Diocese of Meath. From 27th January 2027, the Bishop will minister the Sacrament of Confirmation to about 4,500 candidates, at seventy ceremonies, representing the 174 primary schools of which he is patron as well as candidates from other schools. The Diocese of Meath includes the greater part of Counties Meath, Westmeath and Offaly, and a portion of Counties Longford, Louth, Dublin and Cavan.

Also in his video, Bishop Deenihan acknowledges with gratitude the support of families, sponsors and parish communities to candidates as they prepare to deepen their relationship with Christ to become active witnesses to the Gospel.

As the 2027 Diocese of Meath Confirmation Class continues its preparation, Bishop Deenihan encourages candidates to approach the Sacrament with prayer and openness, recognising the responsibility and privilege of living out their faith with love and mercy. He is also encouraging families to host modest Confirmation celebrations.

The Bishop’s message echoes recent words from Pope Leo XIV to Confirmation candidates from Genoa, during their visit to the Vatican. At that time, Pope Leo encouraged young people preparing for Confirmation to pray to the Lord for the gift of perseverance, and to make a firm commitment to continue as His friends and disciples.
