Deep concern over school uniform costs

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

As a mother of four school children in Cavan, two in primary and two in secondary, I am deeply concerned about the high cost of school uniforms. Families are already under pressure with books, transport, and other expenses, but uniforms—often only available from specific suppliers—add an extra and unnecessary financial burden.

Children grow quickly, and replacing costly blazers, jumpers, and PE kits every year is simply not affordable for many households. I believe schools should consider more affordable options, such as allowing generic items from regular shops, offering multiple suppliers and putting up cap on uniform prices.

For one child split up cost of one set of uniform is:

Shirt: €15

Trousers: €25

Tie: €8

Jumper: €45

Blazer: €80

Shoes: €45

PE uniform: €80

Education should be equal for all, and no family should feel financial strain just to meet uniform requirements.

All parents are not eligible for back to school allowance.

Sincerely,

Meher un nisa

Cavan
