U18s team in Letterkenny

Cavan Town through to Ulster Semis

U18s advance to next round after 5:2 win in Donegal

High flying cavan town under 18s set out on the long journey to Donegal to take on Letterkenny Rovers in the quarter final of the Ulster Cup. In blizzard like conditions, despite the elements, it took the town only 20 mins to break the northern deadlock with defender Cian McConnell popping up where it mattered and scoring the first of five goals for the Cavan side.

The initial celebrations were short-lived, as it only took Letterkenny only a few minutes to hit back twice, taking the lead. With the conditions worsening it came down to the physical battles to win the match. With central midfiedler Tiernan Kelly switching wide, he offered an element of suprise to Donegals defense. Left winger Lukas Hanley was looking for space in the box, but was taken down. Striker Jay Graham comfortably slotted the equaliser in from the spot.

Fair result at the end of the first half as the sides left the pitch 2-2. The half time talks obviously had energised the Cavan town side. With the match back in full swing Cavan showed desire to break down the defense and find space to create chances. It was only a matter of time that Tiernan Kelly could take advantage of his pace and drilled in the 3rd goal for the town.

With relentless pressure up front and composure in the back, Cavan broke the lines and seemed to find their rhythm, with some great saves from Sam Lynch to keep the away side up. In quick succession striker Jay Graham slotted the 4th and final 5th goal, completing his hat trick. The Cavan town boys kept control of the game, not allowing Letterkenny any unwanted movements across the pitch. The referee blew the whistle to a final score of 5-2 - and the celebrations started. The young team now take on Milford, another Donegal team in the Ulster Cup to play the semi-final next Saturday 29th at 2 pm on home turf Cavan Astro. They will be looking to book the first slot in the final.
