‘Alternative’ to CMX bandstand welcomed

Sinn Féin's Colm Carthy has welcomed an update that Monaghan County Council is finalising an alternative to a planned bandstand adjacent to the Carrickmacross Civic Offices on the Riverside Road.

The local authority had obtained grant support for such a project, and went so far as to issue a tender, however costings eventually proved prohibitive and elected members urged the executive to look at different ways to utilise the funds.

The initial plan involved constructing a bandstand on the existing paved podium area, to include access steps and ramps, LED light strips, power sockets, water supply, and an electric retractable steel door for protection from the elements.

The update was provided to local councillors in the Carrickmacross–Castleblayney Municipal District when they met for their December meeting by Senior Area Engineer, Damien Thornton. He said that the executive, in conjunction with the Department, is “currently exploring” a number of potential alternative projects.

Councillors were told a “suitable alternative” could be confirmed and approved by early Q1, 2026.
