Refused bail on charges related to €150k drug seizure
A man, charged in connection with a €150,000 drug seizure in Cavan yesterday, has been refused bail at Monaghan District Court this morning.
Aleksej Sergejev (48) with an address at a property in St Clare’s Court, Cavan Town, appeared before Judge Raymond Finnegan. He is charged with possession of drugs for sale or supply.
He was arrested yesterday (Tuesday), February 3, after gardaí attached to the Divisional Drugs Unit intercepted and searched a vehicle in Cavan Town on Tuesday, February 3, and seized a quantity of suspected cannabis.
A follow-up search, under warrant, at a separate location in the county town resulted in the seizure of more drugs. During the raid, officers seized cannabis with an estimated street value of €112,000, cocaine valued at approximately €56,000, as well as more than €12,000 in cash.
Gardaí objected to bail in Monaghan this morning due to the seriousness of the charges, the value of suspected drugs involved and the potential for Mr Sergejev to be a flight risk.
A woman, also arrested as part of the investigation, was released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the matter.
All seized substances will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for detailed analysis as investigations continue.
