Over €660k for heritage projects in Cavan and Monaghan

Government has today announced funding of over €660,000 for projects aimed at preserving historic structures in Cavan and Monaghan.

Stuart's Shop in Killeshandra received a total of €164,432 for repair works, while Bawnboy Workhouse received €152,312 under the Historic Structures Fund.

Meanwhile, €184,943 went to projects in Cavan under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme while a total of €161,952 was granted to Monaghan.

Welcoming today’s announcement Minister Niamh Smyth described Cavan’s historic buildings as the "heartbeat" of towns and villages.

"I am thrilled that both Stuart’s Shop in Killeshandra and the Bawnboy Workhouse have been recognised with this substantial funding. By investing in these landmarks, we are ensuring these structures remain vibrant parts of our community’s future. I look forward to seeing the impact this funding has on both premises.”

"This scheme operates on a match-funding basis, with owners and custodians of historic buildings obliged to contribute towards the final cost of works," she said.

Deputy Brendan Smith also welcomed the funding.

"I compliment Cavan County Council and particularly the Heritage Office on their submission of these successful applications which necessitated detailed preparatory work.  I have worked closely with the Council's Community and Enterprise Office and with Anne Marie Ward Heritage Officer in seeking grand aid from the Department of Rural and Community Development and from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage for these restoration works.

"These improvement works are important and essential for both of these buildings which are significant historic structures in Killeshandra and Bawnboy," he stated.
