A view of congestion around Coolshannagh roundabout, Monaghan Town over the weekend

All roads lead to Monaghan as fuel price protest becomes mobile

All roads in Co Monaghan are clear this morning. The Anglo-Celt received confirmation from one of a group of protesters who maintained a blockade of Monaghan Town Bypass since Thursday night. It is understood that the blockade at Castleshane has also been removed. All exits on Coolshannagh roundabout were also blocked since Friday morning.

It is understood that the roundabout was vacated by protesters at midnight on Sunday (yesterday) and a rolling protest, incorporating vehicles from the Monaghan bypass protest and Castleshane blockade took place between 4am and 9.30am this morning. “We’re sticking with rolling protests to give the businesses in Monaghan a chance to breathe,” a spokesperson confirmed.

When asked if the group were happy with the measures announced by Government yesterday, (Sunday), the spokesperson, who is in touch with the protesters who took their grievances to Dublin, added: “Not really, no. I think it was a bit of an insult. There's no sign of anything being done with inflation of food or anything like that. So, there could have been a lot more done. The carbon tax was just kicked down the road; they didn’t attempt to take anything off it at all.”
