Wastewater plant upgrade confirmed

The Cootehill Wastewater Treatment Plant is set to be upgraded as part of Uisce Éireann’s nationwide infrastructure delivery programme.

The utility company has welcomed the Commission for Regulation of Utilities’ (CRU) decision, which provides the framework for investment in water and wastewater services through to 2029 and supports a €13.6bn programme of capital and operational expenditure across the country.

The Cootehill investment is aimed at protecting environmental quality and supporting the long-term sustainability of wastewater services in the local area.

According to Uisce Éireann’s latest Capital Investment Plan 2025-2029, the Cootehill project is scheduled for completion in 2030.

The upgrade forms part of a wider package of wastewater infrastructure improvements planned across County Cavan, with treatment plant upgrades also proposed for Virginia, Ballyjamesduff, Kingscourt, Bailieborough and Ballyconnell.

It is the second major investment announcement regarding water services in the Cootehill in almost as many years.

In late 2023 Irish Water completed a major project addressing problematic water mains in Griffith Park area of the town.

The works involve the replacement of over 226 metres of aged cast iron water mains with new modern pipes and aims to provide a more reliable water supply for the area, reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality.
