A number of people remain in custody after public order incident

The Celt understands a number of people remain in custody this morning after a public order incident which took place in Virginia yesterday.

It's understood their detention will be extended for a period of six hours, while gardaí are to launch a search of local waterways in response to allegations that a weapon was produced during the course of the incident.

It's believed three people have been left with significant but non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the incident.

The garda press office confirmed they were alerted to a  public order incident on Main Street, Virginia, Co Cavan, just after 5pm yesterday evening (Tuesday), July 21.

A spokesperson said: "Several persons have been conveyed to hospital. Investigations are ongoing."

The Celt understands that a group of youths were involved in the incident which began close to Lough Ramor, and then spilled on to the streets of the town.

Those in custody are currently being detained at stations in Bailieborough and Cavan for questioning.
