Record breaking 25th Breffni Challenge in Arva

A special moment for this Babe In Arms, crossing the line in Arva on Saturday. For more photos, see page 48 of this week's print edition.The 3 Province Breffni Challenge celebrated its 25th anniversary in style, with a record-breaking 1,231 participants taking part.
Chairperson Philip Brady said organisers were delighted with the turnout, which exceeded all expectations.
“In recent years we had been working towards reaching the 1,000 mark, and when we finally got there, we really smashed it,” Philip told the Celt.
Participants travelled from across Ireland, and further afield, including Wales and New Zealand, with many returning, even combining the event with a holiday and a chance to meet friends.
Favourable weather conditions also helped create a memorable occasion.
The challenge, which takes place across the three provinces route, saw more than 150 cyclists completed the 100km cycle, while many others took part in the 50km cycle and the various walking and running events.
“What makes it unique is that there are seven different events taking place on the one day,” Philip explained. “When we started off it was very small, but we have a great committee every year that puts in a huge amount of work.”
Again this year's event also brought a festival atmosphere to the town, with entertainment, music and family activities helping to keep visitors in the area throughout the day.
At its heart though the challenge continues to raise vital funds for charity, with this year’s beneficiaries including Cavan Monaghan Palliative Care, Friends of St. Luke's, and the National Breast Cancer Research Institute.
While final figures are still being calculated, Philip believes the total will surpass last year’s amount, in the region of €35,000.
Over the past 25 years, the Breffni Challenge has raised more than €1 million for charities and community causes, and Philip paid tribute to the generosity of sponsors, local businesses, volunteers and participants.
“We are very grateful for all the sponsorship we receive locally. Whether it is a small contribution or support from larger businesses, every bit helps,” he said. “We are also extremely grateful to every participant who comes from all over the country.”
