Kingscourt Star as SFC kicks-off

The reigning champions, Kingscourt Stars, began their defence of the Oliver Plunkett Cup with a narrow 1-13 to 0-14 victory over Ramor United last night.

Played under the setting sun at Kingspan Breffni, the Stars raced into an early lead aided by a two-point effort from full-back John McCullogh in the ninth minute.

Ramor had opportunities in the first-half and should have had two goals. However, they failed to convert either chance.

Before the interval, Jordan Morris’ two-pointer for the stars put the County Champions in front, and half-time they led 0-8 to 0-7.

Kingscourt edged ahead in the third quarter and led by three-points with just over quarter of an hour remaining.

That’s when Jordan Morris linked up with wing-forward Caoimhin McGee, who was cool as ice in front of goal, to put the Stars beyond reach of Ramor.

The gap was closed in the closing stages, but in the Kingscourt had too much for the Virginia club.

Kingscourt will be back in Breffni Park next Friday, when they face Mullahoran at 8pm. Ramor face Cuchulainns next Saturday in Kingspan Breffni, at 7pm.

JFC

In the Junior Football Championship, Drung overcame Redhills by two-points, 1-15 to 1-13.

It was a feisty, but entertaining game in O’Boyle Park Drumgoon, Drung raced ahead, and Redhills spent much of the game trying to pull them back in.

With ten minutes to play, the game drew level on several occasions, with Drung continuing to retake and surrender the lead.

They took it back in the closing stages and clung on for a two-point victory.

Elsewhere, nothing could separate Templeport from Belturbert. They played out a 2-10 to 0-16 draw at Paric Gael na Sionnainne, Blacklion.

A slow start for Belurbet saw Templeport race into the lead, and it was until the 20-minute mark that the Rories grew into the game.

From then on, the game went down to the wire, with late drama and opportunities for both sides to win it.
