Ballyhaise fightback to claim a point

Five matches in SFC first round

Ballyhaise's amazing comeback to claim a point off Gowna was the stand out result from the weekend's first round of the Cavan Senior Football Championship.

With three first half goals on the scoreboard, Gowna looked in command of the tie, but Ballyhaise rallied in the second half, and Brían O’Rourke held his nerve to clip over a superb left-footed point to wrestle an unlikely draw.

There were five matches in total, with Sunday's other tie, Arva v Crosserlough match postponed due to a bereavement. It has been refixed for Kingspan Breffni this Wednesday at 8pm.

On Saturday Laragh United put it up to Cuchulainns in the first half at Kingspan Breffni. However the Intermediate champions bossed the second half and had seven points to spare thanks in part to Glenn McCann's goal and a fine performance from Adam O'Reilly.

At the same venue later on Saturday evening Killygarry made heavy work of overcoming Castlerahan. Having led from the start, and powered by strong performances by Cian Keaney (1-5) and Darragh Noonan, they looked set to claim the points in a straight forward victory. However the introduction of Enda Flanagan and Ciaran Caldwell from the bench saw Castlerahan gain much greater fluency in attack. Eventually it was the crossbar that came to Killygarry's rescue in maintaining a three point win at the whistle.

On Thursday evening, Kingscourt got their defence underway in beating Ramor United; while Friday evening saw Mullahoran impress against Cavan Gaels, winning by five.
