Clones survive Tyholland scare at St. Tiernach's Park

Clones got their McElvaney Waste & Recycling Intermediate Football Championship campaign off to the perfect start with a hard-fought two-point victory over Tyholland at St. Tiernach’s Park on Sunday evening.

Darren Freeman hauled 0-9 as the home side eventually shrugged off their plucky guests for a deserved win.

Three first-half points from county man Cameron Dowd, who stepped up in the absence of Fintan Kelly, saw the hosts lead 0-9 to 1-4 at the break despite conceding an early goal when Sean Treanor palmed to the net.

Clones opened up a six-point lead early in the second period, but Tyholland were level less than 15 minutes from time thanks to a blockbuster from the boot of Darragh Treanor past Johnathan Douglas.

Oisin Kierans and substitute David Freeman added to the Clones lead and Johnny Feely’s side held on, despite a goal from Dermot Coyle and a dramatic last-ditch attempt from Dara McKenna.
