Family focus at the Creighton Hotel
The Creighton Hotel, which dates back to 1884, has been in the ownership of the McCarville family since 1984.
For more than four decades, the family has played a central role in the life of the Clones community, continuing a tradition of hospitality that has made the hotel a familiar meeting place for generations.
Today, proprietors Patrick McCarville and Edel Brennan continue that family tradition, having taken over the business from their parents. For them, the Creighton Hotel is about much more than simply running a hotel, it has always been at the centre of family life and remains a meeting place for the wider community.
Throughout the year, the hotel welcomes people for christenings, communions, confirmations, anniversaries and parties, with its many function rooms often catering for several celebrations at the same time.
The main function room can accommodate up to 180 people and provides access to the beautiful courtyard, dating back to 1873 and offering a unique setting in the heart of Clones town.
Food remains a major part of the Creighton Hotel’s offering. The menu changes with the seasons, but the people preparing and serving that food remain a constant.
Patrick is particularly proud of the hotel’s loyal team, who play such an important role in ensuring guests enjoy their time at the Creighton.
“Our staff are very loyal and they are always there to help make sure people have a great experience,” says Patrick.
Leo’s Restaurant at the Creighton Hotel continues to welcome guests for evening meals and Sunday lunch, offering a warm and inviting setting for locals and visitors alike.
Meanwhile, the Meeting Place Terrace provides another popular spot for friends and families to catch up over a coffee or enjoy one of the hearty lunch options available each day.
For those visiting the area, the hotel now has 20 newly-refurbished bedrooms available, offering comfortable accommodation at competitive rates.
The family’s commitment to the business and the local community was recognised county-wide this year when the Creighton Hotel was named Best Family Business at the Monaghan Business and Tourism Awards 2026.
For Patrick and Edel, the award was a particularly special achievement.
“Winning the award was a big honour for the family,” Patrick says.
“Our whole life is based in and around the hotel. It has always been at the centre of our lives, so it means a lot to us. We love it.”
The family has continued to invest heavily in the business over recent years, developing and refurbishing the hotel while retaining its strong connection with the local community.
“We have developed the hotel massively over the last fifteen years, and it’s just lovely to get the recognition county-wide for that,” Patrick says.
That combination of family, food, hospitality and community remains at the heart of what the Creighton Hotel offers.
