New school year brings fresh start for Gaelscoil Lorgan, Castleblayney

There was plenty of excitement at Gaelscoil Lorgan this week as pupils returned for the first full school year in the school's impressive new home on the Shercock Road in Castleblayney.

Principal Michelle Uí Mhairtín, said staff and pupils are still "at the pinching stage" after moving into the long-awaited building.

From humble beginnings with just 24 pupils and two teachers, Gaelscoil Lorgan has grown to 178 pupils and a staff of 17.

"It's taken time for the school to get established and for families to put their trust in us," said Michelle. "Those first families who chose Irish-medium education really have to be admired because without them we wouldn't have the school we have today."

The school now boasts eight classrooms, learning support rooms, a general-purpose hall, extensive outdoor space and a dedicated sensory room.

While the facilities have transformed, Michelle said the school's core focus remains the same.

"It's not just about the language. It's about the culture, the music, the sport and giving children a strong sense of who they are."

She pointed to the growing popularity of Irish in Monaghan, noting that the county has one of the strongest Irish-speaking communities outside the Gaeltacht.

Among the proudest moments for the school recently was seeing a former pupil return as a member of staff.

"One of the very first pupils who came through our doors is back teaching with us this year. That's very special."

Looking ahead, Michelle hopes to see the school continue to grow and eventually expand to eight mainstream classes, while further developing its preschool provision.

For now, however, the focus is on enjoying a landmark moment in the school's history.

"The children are delighted to be here," she said. "But at the end of the day, it's the people who make a school. We're very lucky to have a fantastic team and a wonderful school community."
