'Major' fire at Kingspan Breffni forces weekend closure

Tonight’s (Friday, August 28) Kyte Powertech Senior Championship Round 3 fixture moved to Mullahoran.

A “major” fire in the kitchen area at Kingspan Breffni overnight has forced the venue to close for the weekend, resulting in a number of fixtures being relocated.

The incident has caused significant disruption to the weekend’s fixture calendar, with further details expected once the full extent of the damage has been assessed.

The fire is understood to have broken out sometime after the stadium had emptied on Thursday night, following the conclusion of the Laragh United versus Crosserlough game.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochána confirmed: “Gardaí received a report of a fire at a sportsground in Cavan which occurred shortly before 12:30am on 28th August 2026.”

No injuries were reported, they say, and the fire was extinguished by the local fire service.

“Due to a major incident at Kingspan Breffni overnight, the venue is out of commission for the weekend,” the county board posted on social media. “Further details will be shared once the full extent of the damage has been assessed. Thank you for your understanding.”

The immediate consequence is the relocation of tonight’s (Friday, August 28) Kyte Powertech Senior Championship Round 3 fixture between Ballyhaise GAA and Ramor Utd GFC.

The game will now take place at Our Lady of Lourdes, Mullahoran Dreadnoughts, with throw-in scheduled for 8pm.

Organisers have confirmed that all tickets already purchased for the fixture will remain valid.

An update on the remaining fixtures affected by the closure is expected throughout the day as alternative arrangements are finalised.

A spokesperson for Cavan GAA told the Celt that the Competitions Control Committees (CCC) are working to coordinate the remaining weekend fixtures.

Supporters are thanked for their patience, understanding and cooperation following the overnight incident.
