Cavan Women’s Shed back by popular demand

The Cavan Women’s Shed are preparing to welcome their 200 members back after the summer break.

Returning on Thursday, Secretary Cora O’Connell says the committee has a packed schedule of events prepared. Thursday’s talk will feature psychotherapist Fiona Hall who will speak on how to declutter and let go of items that are no longer needed. As always, the talk will be followed by tea, coffee and refreshments.

Following this, the group will host a talk on mental health, a GP will also be speaking on overall health and wellbeing, while they also have line dancing classes, exercise classes, mindfulness and sound bath sessions coming up.

“We try to cater for a wide range of interest and activities,” Cora says.

“All the committee work really well together. Everybody combines their suggestions and comes up with things. Everybody’s willing to help out.”

While they have over 200 members, Cora says usually around 90 come to each session held on a Thursday morning at Cavan Rugby Club. They are actively encouraging new members to come along, and while The Women’s Shed is generally directed at women over fifty, everybody is welcome to come along. They also have some members with additional needs who are catered for within the group.

“It’s a way of meeting people and having a chat because, after the session, we always finish up with tea, coffee, and light refreshments and a chat.”

The Shercock native, who now lives in Cavan Town, has been a member of the group for a year and a half, however she says it’s not just people from the town who come along each week, but others from Knockbride, Lavey and beyond.

“People come from all over,” she says, adding that The Women’s Shed is back by popular demand.

“It’s great to hear the feedback from people, that they have enjoyed it. Already people are inquiring about when it is back for the autumn now, because they’ve missed it over the summer.

“It’s great to know that you’re having an input into people’s lives and helping people.”

There is a fee of €5 for each class, which takes place from 10:30am to 11:30am every Thursday at Cavan Rugby Club with refreshments afterwards.
