Cavan theft accused faces new charges, released on bail
A MAN who appeared in Cavan District Court on a charge of shoplifting and another of handling stolen prescriptions, was arrested before the latest sitting and charged with three fresh charges in relation to buying goods with someone else’s bank card.
Arnold Lingurar with an address at 34 Market Street, Cootehill, was brought to appear at Cavan District Court on August 28 from prison. The 24-year-old was in custody in Castlerea Prison on the first two charges since May.
Gda Doherty from Cavan Garda Station confirmed that before the district court sitting of August 28, she charged the defendant with the new alleged offences.
They include stealing property worth €17.65 on April 27, 2025, from Hall’s Newsagents on Main Street, Bailieborough, by using a Revolut card belonging to another named individual.
She also charged him with stealing goods to the value of €21 from the same newsagents on the same date using an AIB card also belonging to the same individual and stealing €14.99 worth of goods from Hall’s Newsagents on the same date using a bank card belonging to the same man.
Gda Doherty told the court that when cautioned, Mr Lingurar made no reply.
He was taken into custody after he failed to take up bail over the first charges against him.
The defendant was previously charged with stealing two pairs of Rayban sunglasses valued at €230 each from Sheehan Opticians on 99 Main Street, Cavan, on January 18, 2025.
He was also charged with handling stolen property, namely prescription scripts, at Cavan General Hospital on November 11 last.
After he failed to turn up to his first court date on May 21, Mr Lingurar was arrested on a bench warrant and taken before the court a week later. During that hearing, he was remanded into custody with consent to bail.
At a court sitting in June, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the first two alleged offences and elected to have his case dealt with in the district court.
Sergeant Damien Galligan explained to Judge Mary McAveety that Mr Lingurar contested the charges and the garda applied to have him further remanded in custody until November for a hearing. The sergeant said Mr Lingurar is represented by a solicitor but that he was not in court because of the ongoing criminal legal aid dispute.
The sergeant said the State has no objection to bail on the bank card matters given their “relatively minor” nature if nominal bail is set.
Judge McAveety told Mr Lingurar she did not want to put him on election without his solicitor present and released him on bail to appear before Cavan District Court on September 17 for garda disclosure in the bank card charges and November 13 for a hearing in the stolen goods case.
