Remanded in custody on €25k theft charges

A man facing 13 individual charges of alleged theft totalling more than €25,000 remains in custody with consent to bail.

Modestas Milevicius (22) appeared before Judge Raymond Finnegan at Cavan District Court on foot of a bench warrant, with gardaí objecting to bail.

Mr Milevicius, of Ard Na Laoi, Drumalee, was not legally represented due to the ongoing solicitors' strike and also did not have the benefit of an interpreter.

Objections to bail being granted were outlined to the court by Garda Shauna Ward.

He is charged with stealing a mobile phone, the property of Neriginijus Simkas, at St Patrick's Terrace, Cavan Town, on January 23, 2026; and with the theft of money from a PTSB account linked to the same alleged injured party, in four separate transactions on that same date totalling €9,500 in the space of less than 30 minutes; five transactions the following day, January 24, totalling €9,000; one transaction on January 25 for €2,000 at 4:30am; and one on January 26 for €2,500, at 1:26am.

He is also charged with failing to appear at Cavan District Court on September 4, 2026, having entered bail on January 30, 2026.

Details of each of the alleged charges were relayed to the court, with Mr Milevicius alleged to have moved the funds from Mr Simkas’ PTSB account into his own Revolut folio.

A file is now with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the matter.

Mr Milevicius had no questions for the garda witness, explaining that he missed the last court date because he was working in Dublin at the time and could not afford to travel up and down.

Judge Finnegan reminded Mr Milevicius that he is accused of “very serious charges”.

“I know,” he replied.

The judge remanded him in custody with consent to bail, requiring an independent surety of €2,500 to be lodged.

Other conditions are that the defendant have no contact with the alleged injured party, sign on daily at a local garda station, reside at his given address, and remain contactable by gardaí.

Two weeks later Mr Milevicius appeared at Cavan District Court via video link where he was once again remanded for two weeks as directions are “still awaited”.
