Kyte Powertech announces 2026 scholarship recipients

Kyte Powertech is delighted to announce Ultan O’Reilly and Shauna McLoughlin as its 2026 scholarship recipients. Both are studying engineering at NUI Galway and will receive support and professional mentoring as they begin this new chapter in their education.

Former Loreto College student Shauna will be mentored by Stephen McSharry, Industrial Engineering Manager; while former St Patrick’s College student Ultan will be mentored by Dr Thomas Williamson, Head of Design. Their guidance will provide a direct connection to engineering in practice, helping the students relate their academic studies to the challenges and opportunities encountered in industry.

Mentoring forms an important part of the Kyte Powertech Scholarship. Through access to experienced professionals, recipients can discuss their developing interests, gain insight into working life and explore the different directions their qualifications could take them.

Speaking about her course and the scholarship, Shauna from Belturbet said: “The course brings together many subjects I’m keen to explore. I look forward to studying all aspects of engineering at NUI Galway and applying these skills through hands-on experience at Kyte Powertech.”

Mullahoran man Ultan added: “Starting university is a big step, and I’m grateful to Kyte Powertech for this opportunity. I’m particularly looking forward to speaking with Dr Williamson about his work in design and the different directions an engineering career can take.”

The scholarship reflects Kyte Powertech’s commitment to supporting education and developing talent within the local community. Established in Cavan in 1977, the company designs and manufactures oil-filled distribution transformers for customers across Ireland and international markets. Its operations bring together expertise across engineering, manufacturing and a broad range of business functions, demonstrating the variety of careers available within the sector.

For students beginning higher education, a connection with industry can provide valuable perspective throughout their studies.

The opportunity to learn from professionals, ask questions and understand how knowledge is applied in the workplace can help build confidence and inform future career decisions.

Applications for the 2027 Kyte Powertech Scholarship intake will open in November 2026.

Kyte Powertech will visit secondary schools across Cavan to introduce the programme, explain the application process and speak with students about the opportunity.

Students considering their next steps in higher education are encouraged to find out more during the school visits.

The scholarship offers an opportunity to establish a connection with a local employer whose work reaches international markets, while benefiting from guidance as they develop their own ambitions.
