Ireland building an 'AI-ready nation'
The 2026 International AI Summit is underway today (Wednesday) in the RDS Dublin.
Ireland is taking steps to build an 'AI-ready nation', says Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation Niamh Smyth.
Speaking earlier today at the 2026 International AI Summit in Dublin, where global leaders are gathered for one of the most significant gatherings of AI leaders and policymakers held in Europe this year, Minister Smyth said that realising the opportunity of AI is "not possible without strong foundations in place."
"It requires investment in skills, innovation, infrastructure, and of course, adoption. It requires an ecosystem that brings together talent, technology, research and enterprise, allowing new ideas to move from possibility to practical applications."
Minister Smyth also spoke about the importance of a commitment to "responsible and human-centric AI" so citizens and businesses can "enjoy the many benefits" of AI, without "needing to worry" about safety or harms.
"Governments have an essential role to play in ensuring that these foundations are in place."
"For Europe, people are our greatest resource. In Ireland, we recognise this and we are building our AI ready nation."
As part of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the event has been planned to help shape Europe's approach to AI competitiveness, innovation and trust.
Throughout the day, prominent figures in artificial intelligence, technology, business and public policy will lead the conversation on how Europe can capture the potential of AI to grow prosperity across the EU in a way that is consistent with European values.
