MEET THE FINALISTS: BEST FAMILY BUSINESS
From a small grocery shop and general store in Canningstown to a thriving family business employing around 30 full-time and part-time staff, McCabe Feeds and General Merchants has come a long way since Leo and Rosita McCabe began their journey.
The couple established the limited company in 1996, gradually expanding the business and, in 2006, building an animal feed mill and agricultural store. Further expansion followed, including a major extension of the agri-store and warehousing, allowing the business to significantly broaden its product range.
Today, the McCabe operation encompasses its Canningstown retail business and sister company Rhino Products, which supplies customers across Ireland with products such as bale wrap and silage sheeting.
McCabes’ online business, established more than a decade ago, has also become an important part of the operation, particularly following the changes brought about by Covid.
Rosita McCabe said the family remains closely involved in the day-to-day running of the business, with son Damien, daughter Rachel and Damien’s wife Leanne now part of the team.
“It’s lovely to see the next generation coming through and getting involved, because when this started out, as a little grocery shop, all those years ago, we didn’t think it would lead to where we are today,” she said.
The family’s approach also extends to the wider workforce.
“Our staff are a huge part of our story. We’re lucky to have such a great team around us because, without them, none of what we have achieved would have been possible.”
That family ethos is also reflected in the company’s strong community links. McCabe Feeds has sponsored Knockbride football club for more than 30 years and continues to support other local fundraisers and community events.
Last year, Rhino Products’ Yellow Wrap campaign raised more than €21,000 for children’s cancer charities Barretstown and Aoibheann’s Pink Tie.
For Rosita, the journey has been one of “30 years of long, hard work, long hours, facing challenges, learning along the way and a lot of good times too” — with family, staff and community at its heart.
