Garda appeal after fatal N2 crash

Woman 70s dies, two others seriously injured

A woman in her 70s has died following a serious two-car collision on the N2 at Broomfield

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 10.10am this morning (Thursday, October 22), prompting a major Garda response and the closure of the busy route as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the latest road tragedy.

The woman, a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was subsequently removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where a postmortem examination is due to take place. The county coroner has been notified.

Two other people were also injured in the collision.

The driver of the car in which the deceased woman was travelling, a woman in her 30s, and the driver of the second vehicle, a man in his 50s, were both taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for what has been described as serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The N2 remains closed while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carry out a technical examination of the scene.

Diversions are in place, and motorists are advised to take account of the disruption when travelling in the area.

Gardaí are meanwhile making an urgent appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have information that could assist the investigation, to come forward.

Road users who travelled along the N2 at Broomfield between 10am and 10.30am on Thursday, October 22, are particularly asked to check any available camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, and make relevant material available to investigating Gardaí.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Carrickmacross Garda Station on 042 9690140, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochána confirmed that the investigation is “ongoing”.
