Clarity sought on future of rural water and group schemes
Fianna Fáil Councillor John Paul Feeley is to call on the Irish Government and Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to finalise plans for the Rural Water Programme, while highlighting the importance of protecting Group Water Schemes and the communities that depend on them.
The schemes face ongoing challenges, including ageing infrastructure, rising operational costs, water quality requirements and the need for investment in treatment facilities and distribution networks.
Many are managed by local voluntary committees, which carry responsibility for maintaining infrastructure, monitoring water quality and ensuring reliable supplies.
In July 2025, the Government announced €74 million in capital investment funding under the 2024-2026 Rural Water Programme, primarily supporting Group Water Schemes with water quality improvements, source protection and leakage reduction.
Councillor Feeley's motion, set to go before a meeting of Cavan County Council next week, Monday, November 9, looks for certainty about future funding arrangements and long-term Government support.
