Cavan golfers lift Jimmy Bruen Shield

It is the first time in the competition's history that a Cavan team has won the competition

The Leona Maguire effect seems to be spreading, after Cavan County Golf Club won the AIG sponsored Jimmy Bruen final.

The Jimmy Bruen Shield was inaugurated in 1798 commemorates the late Jimmy Bruen of Muskerry Golf Club who inspired the British & Irish Team to their first win in the Walker Cup at St. Andrews in 1938.

Bruen was only 18-years old at the time and a schoolboy at the Presentation Brothers.

It is the first time in the competition's history that a Cavan team has won the competition, with victory secured at Gowran Park Golf Club in Belfast, after extended matchplay.

Teams competing for the prestigious shield consist of ten members playing Foursomes medal-play with a combined handicap of 23 and the minimum handicap of 6 with a maximum handicap of 17 or any combination of the above not grater than 23 combined.
