Anne Rabbitte T.D. Minister of State for Disabilities in the Department of Children, Disability, Equality Integration, paid a visit to Drumlin House Cootehill on Monday afternoon and is welcomed by Breege O'Reilly (Centre Manager) and gets a welcome handshake from Mark McElroy (Centre User).

Down syndrome centre included in pilot funding scheme

The announcement was made yesterday.

The local Down Syndrome Centre has been included in a pilot scheme announced by the Disabilities Minister.

The project, running in five locations across the country, will see the service supported to enhance the services it provides.

Based in Carrickmacross, Down Syndrome North East works with over 80 families across the region, funded so far solely through donations and fundraising.

Speaking after the announcement, Minister Anne Rabbitte said she hopes to see services like Down Syndrome North East providing support and therapies, which in turn will help to take pressure off HSE services.

“That team there, a fabulous team. They’re covering four counties and I think with funding they could expand the delivery of services and take pressure off our disability teams here. I do find the energy in people working within the disability sector is amazing, it’s infectious down here.”

The announcement was made by Minister Rabbitte during a day of engagements in the region which included the opening of the new Group Home in Carrickmacross and a visit to the Drumlin House in Cootehill.

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan and Monaghan, Niamh Smyth welcomed the news.

“I’m delighted that Down Syndrome Centre North East in Carrickmacross has been selected as one of five centres nationwide. This will enhance the existing service being provided at DSCNE presently while easing pressure on the Child Development Team within the HSE.”
