Cahill to star at mcmahons charity gig

The latest singing star to emerge from the county and into the national consciousness, Aine Cahill is to perform at a major fundraising music night at McMahon’s Café Bar in Cavan Town tonight, Friday, August 28.
Fresh from performing on Today FM’s Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show last week, and soon to play the OxJam Oxfam stage at this year’s Electric Picnic art and music festival, Aine will be joined on stage by as many as 10 other acts hoping to raise money for several very worthy causes.
Attracting bands from Cavan and as far afield as Meath, Dublin, Louth, Longford and Kerry, and to be headlined by Longford’s 4 Degrees West, the event is the brainchild of Kilcogy-native Mark Mahon and his ‘Run, Cycle, Jump!’ campaign, with assistance from Aine herself, and Conor Baldwin.
Raising funds and awareness for the National Children’s Hospital, Alzheimers Society and Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services, medical student Mark explained: “The reason why I decided to set up this campaign was while all my college friends decided to go off travelling for the summer, inter-railing and J1’s, instead of working all summer and doing nothing beneficial why don’t I raise some money for charity. I have time why not use it efficiently.”
Aiming to complete a run (the Dublin Marathon in October), Cycle (255km Dublin to Galway-completed) and jump (a 10,000ft skydive scheduled for August 30), Mark has set a goal of €5,000 to be divided among the three charities.
“The reason why I chose those charities I did is because I work as a care assistant in a convalescence and palliative care centre in Dublin. Also, I love children and volunteer most years in the National Children’s Hospital. Plus I’d love to be a paediatrician on I qualify.
“The goal is to raise €5,000, which I hope to divide among the three charities. We’ve raised a massive €2,000 so far which hopefully will steadily increase! I’m hoping this music night at McMahon’s will help up get near grand total,” says Mark. wAine, who’s hit-single ‘Black Dalhia’ is gracing national airwaves at the present time, says she was inspired to get behind the fundraising initiative after hearing how passionate Mark was about the charities being supported. “Its incredible what he’s doing and its great that there are so many people, bands and businesses out there ready to support causes like these,” she said.
Fleshing out the night’s musical roster on the night are brothers Michael and Ferdia O’Brien of band Winterking, Aaron Van Haaster, also from Cavan, as well as Reckless Avenue, Ryan Cahill, Last Second Magic, and Manifesto.
Mark states he has been blown away by the sheer level of generosity shown to his fundraiser by businesses in the locality, saying: “I feel so honoured to be from Cavan. The pure generosity of the Town has been immense; from spot prizes for the raffle to the venue, food, sound production and posters all for free. It’s outstanding!”
Wristbands on the door for event cost €10; including access to the upstairs band area, as well as food and drink promotions throughout the night.
