Official opening of new St Pat's school

A milestone in the esteemed history of a local school was marked this week, when yesterday (Tuesday), Ciaran Cannon TD, the Minister for State at the Department of Education & Skills , joined staff and students in officially opening the €7m new school building at St Patrick’s College, Cavan.
Teachers and their 580 students as well as friends of the school were in attendance as the school marked the occasion with a special mass, concelebrated by former students Primate of All-Ireland Cardinal Sean Brady and Bishop of Kilmore, Leo O’Reilly.
Funded primarily by the Department, but with substantial assistance from the Diocese of Kilmore towards enhancing the academic and sporting facilities at the school, students have been using and learning at the new school building since the beginning of this year’s term last September.
Other developments at the school include the total renovation of the St Augustan’s Wing, known as the ‘new-wing’, and upgrade of the handball facilities and the development of the senior football pitch with new cinder running track and floodlighting.
Meanwhile, the official opening also saw the unveiling of a number of new art installations at the school, based on the theme of ‘Light and Innovation’, and carried out by Paris-based Irish artists Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly, known locally for their work during the All-Ireland Fleadh.
A full report and pictures from the official opening of the new school can be found in next week’s Anglo-Celt newspaper.
