Cavan nanny trial in US delayed to Autumn

The murder trial of the Cavan nanny Aisling Brady-McCarthy in the US has been postponed until the Autumn at least at the request of her defence team.

Lavey-native Ms McCarthy Brady (36) has been in custody since late January 2013 in connection with causing the death of a one-year-old child she had been caring, a charge which was later upgraded to one of murder.

The baby, Rehma Sabir from Cambridge Massachusetts, was hospitalised with severe head injuries and died two days later.

The trial had originally been due to take place in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn just outside Boston next month, with a start date of mid-April.

However, her defence has now asked for the case be put back to give more time for the collection of evidence.

Access to evidence held by prosecution has been a long-running dispute for Ms McCarthy Brady's legal team. Most recently they had a major success in fighting the Cavan woman's case when the charge of assaulting baby Sabir was dismissed last year.

The is now scheduled to take place from October 14 this year, by which time Ms McCarthy Brady will have spent over a year and a half in custody in the US.
