John Joe Nevin out of hospital

Boxer and Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin has left hospital after having both his legs broken in a savage attack on him last week.

Nevin, who boxed out of Cavan boxing Club and is trained by Sinn Fein Cavan Town Councillor Brian McKeown sustained his injuries while apparently trying to mediate a separate dispute in Mullingar on Saturday.

He left Midlands Hospital in Tullamore yesterday and will be using a wheelchair as he begins his recovery, which should take several months.

He thanked fans and his management for all the support he received while in hospital.

A man has been arrested and released in connection with the assault in which it is understood a golf club was used.

'I'm so happy to be leaving hospital and I'm looking forward to putting this unfortunate part of my life behind me and getting better,' said the father of one who recently turned professional in America.
