54m for social housing in cavan and monaghan

Some €5.4m has been allocated to provide 42 new social housing units at locations across counties Cavan and Monaghan. The news was welcomed yesterday (Tuesday) by Minister Heather Humphreys and Deputy Joe O’Reilly (FG).
In Cavan, €1.78 million is being invested to provide 14 new social housing units in Butlersbridge and Ballyhaise, while in Monaghan, €3.6 million is being invested to provide 28 new housing units in Castleblayney and Latlorcan. The announcement is the first phase of the Government’s €4bn Social Housing Strategy. Deputy O’Reilly revealed that in Ballyhaise, eight new units will be built in Woodhouse, costing €1 million and, in Butlersbridge, six new units will be built, costing €780,000.
“It is the first major investment in local authority housing for many years. These 100 projects across the country are 'shovel ready’ and will deliver hundreds of much needed houses in every county,” said Deputy O’Reilly.
Minister Humphreys outlined that nationally more than €300 million is being invested, to provide an additional 1,700 social houses by 2017. It’s estimated that 300 jobs will be created as a result of the investment,” she said.

Recovering
“We are still recovering from the collapse of the housing market, back in 2007 and 2008. It is very important that we provide new social housing units to cope with demand for family homes in communities across the country.”
The government’s housing strategy promises to deliver 35,000 housing units by 2020 and to reduce the housing waiting lists by 25% nationally by 2017.
