Smyth welcomes €1.5million investment and job creation in Kingscourt

Fianna Fáil Deputy for Cavan Monaghan Niamh Smyth has welcomed the announcement of a €1.5 million investment at Kingscourt Plasterboard manufacturer Gyproc.

Deputy Niamh Smyth says: “I am absolutely delighted by this announcement by the company yesterday which will create much needed jobs in the East Cavan town of Kingscourt. This innovative idea by Gyproc to offer a plasterboard recycling service to its construction customers around the country can only create further employment for the town into the future. I wish to congratulate the company on this good news.”

“I know it will see the company recover leftover plasterboard, before recycling it in its Kingscourt facility.  The dumping of plasterboard in landfills is illegal. This too can only benefit the environment, in my view.”

Deputy Smyth continued, “Gyproc hopes to recycle half a million tonnes of it over the next 10 years.  The investment sees the company increase its workforce to 220 people which is such good news for the local area.  Gyproc is the only manufacturer of plasterboard in Ireland and uses gypsum from its mine in Drummond in County Monaghan. This too will bring a significant boost to Drummond.”

Exciting day

Deputy Smyth concluded, “This is a very exciting day for Kingscourt and Drummond and the local economy in general. It follows the opening of a major SuperValu Store in Kingscourt a few weeks ago which will also create and sustain much need employment in the town. In the past number of weeks, a number of additional parking spaces have been provided by Cavan County Council in Kingscourt to help customers using the town for shopping. These parking spaces are very welcome, especially in the run up to Christmas, a busy period for all towns. I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to everyone in the run up to Christmas, to support local business!”
